Learning Through Child Observation
Mary Fawcett and Debbie Watson
For over 40 years, through contacts with students and colleagues
in many different situations, Mary Fawcett’s interest in the subject
of observation has grown and deepened. It is almost invidious
to single anyone out, but she records her gratitude to Barbara
Primmer (who first introduced her to child observation) and Sonia
Jackson (who encouraged her to write this book), and to all the
5x5x5=creativity community, led by Penny Hay, from whom she
has learned so much in the last 15 years. Particular thanks must
go to social work colleagues in the School for Policy Studies at
the University of Bristol for their insights and help over the years.
In preparation of this Third Edition Mary has been delighted
to have had the supportive collaboration of Debbie Watson,
Reader in Childhood Studies. She has brought up-to-date
academic knowledge to the book and, through her Room 13
research project, has produced a very insightful and interesting
new chapter. We would like to especially thank the Room 13
children who participated in this project, who, for ethical reasons,
are known only by their pseudonyms in Chapter Nine. We would
also like to record our appreciation to the adults who made the
project what it was, and who contributed to writing for Chapter
Nine: Shani Ali, Paul Bradley, Ingrid Skeels, Cate Peel and Helen
Manchester – you have all been fantastic to work with. Thanks
also go to Lucy Driver at St Paul’s Nursery and Children’s Centre
for her support, as always.
