PERSON-CENTRED DEMENTIA CARE
Making Services Better with the VIPS Framework
Dawn Brooker and Isabelle Latham
The second edition of this book, like the first, has drawn on lessons
learnt from many practitioners, researchers and people whose lives are
directly affected by dementia. The first edition’s success far outstripped
expectations in terms of readership and has been translated into more
languages than we have been able to keep track of. Providing best
practice in person‑centred dementia care is a global challenge that
can feel overwhelming. We all have much to learn from each other,
whatever our background and whatever country we are from. What
people liked about the first edition of Person Centred Dementia Care –
Making Services Better was that it provided practical and manageable
approaches that care providers could use whatever their role. People
liked the VIPS structure and the photocopiable resource has also
helped with the practical application. We have endeavoured to keep
true to these principles within this second edition.
Since writing the first edition, Dawn has set up the Association for
Dementia Studies at the University of Worcester in the UK. The
ambition, to set up a research centre dedicated to developing evidencebased
practical ways of helping people live well with dementia, was
realised in 2009. The Association for Dementia Studies now has
an active programme of research and education programmes which
has touched the lives of thousands of people. Isabelle joined the
Association in 2011 following a career in care practice. Initially she
worked on the CHOICE research programme. She is now a senior
lecturer and leads on a broad range of research and education projects.
